Tyvek® can be recycled…and so can eyeglasses!

Written by on September 4th 2009

i know, i know….what does tyvek® have to do with eyewear you ask?!

well, here at eye spy optical we love our planet and do our best to reduce, reuse and recycle….but when we receive shipments from a couple of our vendors, they are in tyvek® fedex packs:-( i was always sad having to throw these envelopes in the garbage instead of in our recycling bin…

BUT NOT ANYMORE! i just found out that the tyvek® envelopes can be sent back to dupont for recycling!! Yipee, yahoo! they are #2HDPE, so technically chicago *can* recycle them, but who know what chicago does with them! dupont makes the tyvek® into alternative wood products like park benches:-)

for quantities under 25:

Turn any Tyvek® envelope inside out, so the unprinted white surface shows on the outside. Stuff the inside-out Tyvek® envelope with other used Tyvek® envelopes for recycling.

Address and mail the envelope to:
Tyvek® Recycle
Attn. Shirley B. Wright
2400 Elliham Avenue #A
Richmond, VA 23237

For other quantities and info, check out the dupont recycling page:-)

so nice! and speaking of recycling…

eye spy recycles old eyeglasses by sending them to an organization called New Eyes for the Needy.

if you cannot make it into eye spy and have eyeglasses to donate,
you can send them directly to:
New Eyes for the Needy
549 Millburn Avenue
PO Box 332
Short Hills, NJ 07078

If you have any other little-known recycling tips, please e-mail us!!

The Specs Therapist is Back!!!

Written by on July 19th 2009

Hey Eye Spy friends!

Specs Therapist (Mary Hamilton) here. I’ve been away from Eye Spy for the last two weeks for a cross-country literary tour (The Dollar Store Tour) sponsored by Chicago’s own Featherproof Books. We went to 11 cities in 14 days and I can tell you that everywhere I went I saw Spectacular Specs! I saw Lafonts in New Orleans and I spotted a pair of bright green Theos in Baltimore among many other bright and funky frames.

Rockin’ blue specs in Nashville!

The trip was great, but I missed Eye Spy! The first thing I did was take a walk around the store and coo over all of the new frames that arrived while I was away, I can’t wait to see them on all of you!

It’s good to be back.

Fashion, full circle!!!

Written by on July 15th 2009

We recently read this article about round sunglasses. At Eye Spy, we’ve long been in love with round sunglasses. From Anne et Valentin to Lafont, our lines have been the pacemaker to the heartbeat of eyewear fashion. That’s right. We are one step ahead of the eyewear trends, ready with the product so when you say to yourself, “I think I want some round sunglasses” you can just pop on by Eye Spy and you’ll be sure to know that we’ve got you covered. Round sunglasses?

Done.

Round metal frames?

Done.

Round plastic frames?

Done.

Round *and* Rimless *and* blue frames on a fuchsia background with a touch of late afternoon sunlight??

Done and done and done.

It’s because we love you, baby.

Vintage New? Vintage Old?

Written by on July 9th 2009

I love the look of chunky authentic Vintage Frames! We have a few select vintage frames left in our in-store stock at Eye Spy, but they won’t be around long and let me tell you, when then go, I’m gonna miss them!

See how cute?!

Good for me we also have Francis Klein in our lives. This line embraces the spirit of vintage frames with the construction techniques and materials of modern times:

Ok ok, and I wanted to share a picture of our hula display. Sometimes it’s just so fun to be a part of Eye Spy!!

So whether you want to go authentic with your vintage look, or if you want something a little stronger, stop on by!

I like to peruse the Internets every now and again to find various ways that my favorite accessories, ***eyeglasses***, find their way into artwork.

Who’s the big winner? You are!!!

Written by on July 1st 2009

Congrats to our Eye Spy/Time Out Chicago contest winner, FRED L!

Fred won a free pair of eyeglasses care of Eye Spy Optical! It was a lot of fun choosing a frame for Fred, he was digging the classic look of the Anne et Valentin sunglasses, which are vintage inspired, but have a definite modern quality to their use of angles and color.

Fred settled on a blue Anne et Valentin sunglass frame:

What a lucky guy!

We’ve got a new look!

Written by on June 16th 2009

Check it out!!!

Hey You!! Look at me!!

Eye Spy has a new look!

green is the new awesome

You know us, at Eye Spy, we like to be as green as possible. For a while, we’ve been bored with our plain brown facade. It didn’t accurately represent the Eye Spy attitude!

Then, Alissa had the brilliant idea of putting astro-turf on the store! She cut the panels in her own back yard and put them up with Velcro, so when we remove the middle two panels, we have a fun purple chalkboard hidden away! Wait, there’s more!

It turns out the astro-turf is made out of recycled materials. So we did get the green facade we’ve always wanted. It just took a little elbow grease and a lot of clever thinkin’!

Just in case you dropped your chopstick…

Written by on June 7th 2009

I just came across a photo of IC!Berlin frames being used in a, well, creative manner. We have always told our customers how durable IC!Berlin frames are, referencing real-life incidents…such as the time a customer inadvertently got his IC!Berlin’s run over by a car and the frames were not damaged at all!! But this photo just proves how useful IC!Berlin’s really are….and how much extra time some people have on their hands!

So, remember…if you drop one of your chopsticks on the ground and can’t find another set, just take off your IC!Berlin’s, snap off the temples….and dig in. Delicious!
