Plant-Based Glasses…What?!

Written by on October 12th 2012

We are absolutely crazy about color at Eye Spy.  That’s why we are in love with cellulose-based acetate frames!!!  Cellulose-based acetate is the highest quality plastic for making glasses; it is strong, lightweight, and flexible.  It is also natural , best for you skin, and the best material for intense bold color!

What is the difference between cellulose acetate frames and injection molded plastic frames?

Injection mold frames are made by injecting a more brittle petroleum based plastic that is liquefied, then injected into an aluminum or stainless steel mold. Colors are added through a spray application then coated and tumbled for shine. Injection mold frames are generally less expensive but considered to be lower quality and harmful to the environment:(

Unlike injection molded plastic frames, cellulose based acetate is made from natural elements.  Wood pulp and cotton fibers are used to create this advanced material and it is one of the highest rated hypoallergenics in the world!!!  It is also bio-degradable and from a renewable source.

This natural material arrives in sheet form and is subsequently hand-crafted using over 60 different processes.  It is soft and malleable and feels nice on your skin.  It takes on rich and complex color treatments and has widest range for transparency, rich colors, and finishes. More complex colorations are able to be produced by layering several colors or transparencies in layers and sandwiching them together. There are endless possibilities for these laminated acetates.  Cellulose Acetate for eye wear is made by forming layers of plastic into large blocks then carefully slicing individual parts, hand polishing and finally assembling them into a frame.

Wow, that’s a lot of info, but it is important when you are in the market for new glasses!  Look for the frames that will not only help you look your best…but are made with best quality plastic.  May we suggest you check out some new Anne et Valentin, Theo, or Rapp frames:)

Transported Back in Time with Claire & Oliver Goldsmith

Written by on April 28th 2012

We couldn’t wait to share our excitement for the Claire & Oliver Goldsmith trunk show we will be having in May!

In 1926, Philip Oliver Goldsmith revolutionized how sunglasses were being made.  At a time when cumbersome frames were being made from expensive metals and tortoiseshell, he started fashioning frames from brightly coloured acetates.  Sunglasses became not only a way to protect your eyes from the sun, but thanks to Goldsmith…they also became a fashion statement!

Icons such as Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, and Michael Cain adored them and the name Goldsmith became synonymous with stars and style.

I’ll give you the lowdown on Claire Goldsmith next week, you can drool over these iconic photographs in the meantime, ha!

Mom’s the Word On Saturday, May 12th!

Written by on April 14th 2012

Celebrate Mom’s Day with us on Saturday from 11 AM-5 PM! We will be having an Oliver and Claire Goldsmith Trunk Show…as well as massages, mimosas and munchies, just for mom!

Do you need to get a present for mom, but can’t figure out what to get her? Or maybe she wants to get you a present! Lucky duck! Our rep from two of our vintage-inspiried collections, Claire Goldsmith and Oliver Goldsmith, will be on-hand. In her trunks, she will have of glasses upon glasses in every shape in color…and sunglasses that will make anyone look like a movie star! On Saturday only from 11-5 PM.

Claire Goldsmith is the debut collection of vintage-inspired frames from the great-granddaughter of the iconic eyewear designer Oliver Goldsmith. For three generations, Oliver Goldsmith combined beautiful materials, acetates and hinges with simple and classic style, to create some of the most iconic eyewear in the world. Claire re-established the company in 2005 after a 20 year hiatus, to continue the legacy of the Goldsmith family.

Oliver Goldsmith has been a family-run business for over 80 years. Originally, dress designers approached Goldsmith to create frames to complement their collections. Grace Kelly, Michael Caine, Peter Sellers, Nina Simone and Audrey Hepburn made OG synonymous with stars and style. The rest is history. Now you can get your mum a pair of OG sunglasses and make her look like a star too;-)

Our massage therapist, Adreana Maurer, will be giving powerful back massages from 12-3 PM. In order to relax before your massage, have a mimosa or two…

See you soon!

Dr. Brad Speaks…

Written by on March 7th 2012

Spring has sprung and it’s time to start those outdoor projects, but don’t forget to wear your sunglasses!  Wearing sunglasses provides benefits beyond the obvious comfort and looking even cooler than you already are.  A good pair of sunglasses blocks 100% of the sun’s UV rays.  Why is this important?  The eyelids are the second most likely spot to get skin cancer and exposure to UV rays is a proven cause of skin cancer.  Pterygin, a non-malignant but vision threatening growth on the cornea, is another harmful effect of UV exposure.

But, wait…there’s more!

The acceleration of the onset of cataracts and macular degeneration are caused by the accumulated exposure of UV throughout your life.

So now you have all the excuses you need to get yourself a fantastic pair of sunglasses!

Cheers,

Dr. Brad
