April Green Scene

Written by on March 13th 2013

Okay. We know everyone is trying to get in on the action…but we REALLY do care about the Earth and have been doing anything and everything possible to be green for the past 15 years. Seriously.

What other small retail store has a compost bin, gives used packing materials away to neighboring businesses, never buys any paper, emails receipts, puts LED bulbs in its outdoor sign, and reprimands its employees when they use disposable cups from Starbucks? Huh?!?

Sooooo, this year we will be hosting a bunch of workshops at Eye Spy…from making seed bombs, to creating terrariums in ball jars. Stay posted for the schedule! When we get all of our ducks in a row, we will post the dates and times right here. We promise. If you have any suggestions, hopes or dreams for workshops, feel free to email us!

We can’t wait to see you;-)

Tyvek® can be recycled…and so can eyeglasses!

Written by on September 4th 2009

i know, i know….what does tyvek® have to do with eyewear you ask?!

well, here at eye spy optical we love our planet and do our best to reduce, reuse and recycle….but when we receive shipments from a couple of our vendors, they are in tyvek® fedex packs:-( i was always sad having to throw these envelopes in the garbage instead of in our recycling bin…

BUT NOT ANYMORE! i just found out that the tyvek® envelopes can be sent back to dupont for recycling!! Yipee, yahoo! they are #2HDPE, so technically chicago *can* recycle them, but who know what chicago does with them! dupont makes the tyvek® into alternative wood products like park benches:-)

for quantities under 25:

Turn any Tyvek® envelope inside out, so the unprinted white surface shows on the outside. Stuff the inside-out Tyvek® envelope with other used Tyvek® envelopes for recycling.

Address and mail the envelope to:
Tyvek® Recycle
Attn. Shirley B. Wright
2400 Elliham Avenue #A
Richmond, VA 23237

For other quantities and info, check out the dupont recycling page:-)

so nice! and speaking of recycling…

eye spy recycles old eyeglasses by sending them to an organization called New Eyes for the Needy.

if you cannot make it into eye spy and have eyeglasses to donate,
you can send them directly to:
New Eyes for the Needy
549 Millburn Avenue
PO Box 332
Short Hills, NJ 07078

If you have any other little-known recycling tips, please e-mail us!!

’tis better to give…

Written by on May 27th 2009

Now that you have awesome new glasses, what are you going to do with all those old specs?

Whatcha gonna do?!

1) Be a responsible glasses-wearer and keep one pair as a back-up!

2) Bring the rest to Eye Spy!

Eye Spy Optical is sponsoring a campaign to collect used eyeglasses, jewelry, and hearing aids!

The donated glasses and other items will be sent to New Eyes for the Needy, a non-profit volunteer organization whose mission is to improve the vision of poor children, adults and seniors in the United States and throughout the world.

Last year, New Eyes paid for new prescription eyeglasses for 5,945 needy residents of the U.S. In addition, over 200,000 pairs of recycled eyeglasses were sorted, tested and shipped to medical missions and international charitable organizations in 24 developing nations.

For additional information, visit their website at www.neweyesfortheneedy.org. We have a collection box in our store located at 3350 N. Lincoln Ave. in Chicago

We also have collection boxes at the Lakeview YMCA on Marshfield and at Wishbone at Lincoln and School.

……don’t forget!…….

Stop by Saturday, June 13th for our Sunglass Trunk Show featuring the frames of Persol, Maui Jim, and IC!Berlin! We’ll have a party going from 11-5! Get your Dad a snazzy new pair of UV Blockin’ specs for Father’s day!!!

Anniversary Party!

Written by on October 31st 2008

We’re 10 years old!

holy cow…time flies when you are having fun! we love helping people pick out awesome glasses in fun shapes and colors…i guess we are having so much fun, that time has just slipped right by. we have consistently carried funky, handmade frames, and try to be as helpful and honest as we can. the only real big changes we have made over the years are, updating the interior of the store a bit, and trying to reuse, reduce and recycle everything in sight! sometimes i drive everyone crazy, re-using paper, not using plastic bags, using cloth napkins, etc., etc….but it’s worth it!

we partied on 10/10 from 10-10 to celebrate…along with eating yummy cupcakes from Bleeding Heart Bakery, and making a few toasts with our customers and friends. mary did a great job decorating the store! we all had our party clothes on…..and as you can see, we couldn’t resist decorating for Halloween too:-) BOO!
