Anne et Valentin Trunk Show this Saturday!!!

Written by on November 6th 2012

The Anne et Valentin trunk show is almost here! This Saturday, November 10th you will be able to view and try-on hundreds of Anne et Valentin frames from the new 2013 collection that will be here for one day only!

Anne et Valentin is known for their colorful and playful glasses.  Anne et Valentin uses vibrant colors in many flattering shapes.  They are for the person who enjoys wearing their glasses and wants a signature look.  The collection has a large variety of plastic and metal frames for men and women, so let us help you find the pair that best fits your personality.   Below is a sneak peek of some snazzy new shapes…

Trunk shows are NOT sales…they are exclusive events where the sales rep from each line brings his or her samples for all to try-on. Every sample that the rep has, will be in the store for the weekend only. The shows are open to the public on Saturdays from 11-5 PM...and BY APPOINTMENT only on Sundays from 12-3 PM.

This is your one and only chance to see every color and every shape available in the current collections. We carry a majority of each collection, but we do not have room to stock the entire collection of each line. If you have been looking for the perfect pair or have something specific in mind, this is the time to come in to Eye Spy. You will be like a kid in a candy shop!!

Oh, and did we mention that these trunk shows will be showcasing the 2013 collections that are not in any stores yet? The only drawback is: you might have to wait a few weeks or a few months to receive your frames….but it will be worth it!! See you soon:-)

Mykita Trunk Show this Saturday!!!

Written by on October 30th 2012

The Mykita trunk show is finally here!  Saturday, November 3rd you will be able to view and try on hundreds of Mykita frames.

Mykita is a small company in the heart of Berlin that has been hand-making eye wear since 2003.  We love their unique patented screw-less hinge design.  Mykita frames are almost indestructible since they are cut out of a thin sheet of surgical stainless steel.   Their acetate (plastic) collection is just as durable with its innovative Metal Injection Molding process.

Customer of the Week!!

Written by on October 30th 2012

Lin is our Customer of the Week!  And as you can tell from her photo,  she is just a little excited about her sweet new Rapp frames!  Lin has been getting awesome specs with us since 2004. She was super lucky to pop in the day we got our new collection of Rapp frames delivered! Getting first pick, she nabbed “Ray” in aqua & brown gradient.

We are one of the lucky shops to carry Rapp, since there are only a few places in the world that are hand-picked to carry Rapp. Each frame is hand-crafted in Canada and produced on a limited run. Once it’s sold, it’s gone. The odds of running into someone with the same frame is pretty much zero!

When not searching for sweet frames, Lin can be found pursuing her passion in photography. She was the Queen of Specs’ wedding photographer…and snapped this family portrait four years later with 2 year old Zara:-) There is a new addition to the family…so it is time to call Lin!!

Fields-Versten 2007

Currently, Lin spends her time photographing children and animals, instead of weddings. If you are interested in seeking out her photography skills for your precious loved ones, contact her at  LinEagel(at)earthlink.net .

Thanks for being our Costumer of the week, Lin! You look awesome!

Pumpkin of your Eye?

Written by on October 26th 2012

Pumpkins are a sure sign of fall.  We may carve one for Halloween, decorate with them for Thanksgiving, not to mention baking one into a pie.  But did you know that pumpkin is also a powerhouse of nutrients that are essential for good eye health?

A serving of fresh pumpkin (100 grams) contains 246% of RDA Vitamin A. Vitamin A, also found in high amounts in carrots, is essential in the eye for the proper function of rods (night vision) and cones (color vision).  Pumpkin also contains the powerful anti-oxidants Vitamin C and E which act to prevent cellular damage and aging.

If that weren’t enough reason to eat some pumpkin, it also contains nutrients that protect the macula from age-related macular degeneration.  The phyto-nutrients lutein and zea-xanthin act as a natural “sunscreen” of the macula which protects it from damage from UV rays as we get older.

Pumpkin seeds contain high amounts of zinc, which has also been shown to have a protective effect on the macula.

This year when you are buying your pumpkin to carve, buy an extra to try in a new recipe, like this one I really like from Cooking Light Magazine: Spicy Chicken and Pumpkin Stew!

The Scary Facts about Online Specs…

Written by on October 25th 2012

Anyone can make a mistake once in a great while, but we were shocked to find out that nearly half of lenses are made incorrectly online.  Some were missing coatings, wrong lens types were used, and a quarter of them failed impact testing.  Wow… we can’t believe our peepers!!!

Our lovely customer of the week is the one and only Brenda!

Just look at her sparkly Francis Klein Amanda frames! Who knew clear eyeglasses could be so beautiful?! We had these frames custom-made for Brenda…per her request, of course. She wanted an Art-Deco look, so we chose clear frames with gold, crystal and black decor. Oh, la, la. It’s neutral but fabulous!

Here is the frame that we have in-stock and used as a starting point to create Brenda’s frame:

Plant-Based Glasses…What?!

Written by on October 12th 2012

We are absolutely crazy about color at Eye Spy.  That’s why we are in love with cellulose-based acetate frames!!!  Cellulose-based acetate is the highest quality plastic for making glasses; it is strong, lightweight, and flexible.  It is also natural , best for you skin, and the best material for intense bold color!

What is the difference between cellulose acetate frames and injection molded plastic frames?

Injection mold frames are made by injecting a more brittle petroleum based plastic that is liquefied, then injected into an aluminum or stainless steel mold. Colors are added through a spray application then coated and tumbled for shine. Injection mold frames are generally less expensive but considered to be lower quality and harmful to the environment:(

Unlike injection molded plastic frames, cellulose based acetate is made from natural elements.  Wood pulp and cotton fibers are used to create this advanced material and it is one of the highest rated hypoallergenics in the world!!!  It is also bio-degradable and from a renewable source.

This natural material arrives in sheet form and is subsequently hand-crafted using over 60 different processes.  It is soft and malleable and feels nice on your skin.  It takes on rich and complex color treatments and has widest range for transparency, rich colors, and finishes. More complex colorations are able to be produced by layering several colors or transparencies in layers and sandwiching them together. There are endless possibilities for these laminated acetates.  Cellulose Acetate for eye wear is made by forming layers of plastic into large blocks then carefully slicing individual parts, hand polishing and finally assembling them into a frame.

Wow, that’s a lot of info, but it is important when you are in the market for new glasses!  Look for the frames that will not only help you look your best…but are made with best quality plastic.  May we suggest you check out some new Anne et Valentin, Theo, or Rapp frames:)

New Doctor in Town!

Written by on October 7th 2012

Please allow me to introduce Dr. Deana Labrosse! We hired Dr. Deana because of her stellar optometry background & previous opticianry experience.  As a result, she knows how the prescriptions she writes will work with all of our new customized lenses. How nice. She also looks great in these Lafont Hype green frames:-)  What else could we ask for?!

We asked Dr. Labrosse some ice breaker questions so we could all get to know her a little better.

Why optometry ? The subject is so vast- eyes can tell a lot about systemic health and they are very important to quality of life. And…once the serious business is done, you get to have fun with glasses, especially at Eye Spy!!

Which patients do you enjoy working with the most? The nice ones! Seriously. Every patient has unique needs. It’s interesting to find the best way to help!

What area of optometry do you specialize in? Dry eyes and developmental disability patients.

Favorite movie? I have two favs: Forrest Gump and Waitress…check out the trailer for Waitress:-)

What’s your favorite season? Spring, because winter is OVER.

What do you do in your free time ? Not much… I have a newborn! I *do* play flute and love Ravinia.

And as it turns out, her favorite flavor of ice cream is the same as the Queen of Spec’s daughter (I guess that would make her the princess right?): Vanilla and mango!

Dr. Deana will be examining  peepers at Eye Spy on Wednesdays and Saturdays, so call us at 773.477.2670 to schedule an appointment *or* click here to go to our online scheduling at any hour of the day or night!  Welcome to Eye Spy, Dr. Deana!!

Brittney can now clearly see the stage of the Lyric Opera where is she can be found working on the make-up and wig crew! What an awesome job! Brittney can also be found working on the sets of music videos and photo shoots around the city.
