Customer Of The Week…Daily Double!

Written by on August 11th 2015

Help me welcome Robin to the Customer Of The Week Club!

ROBIN_O2 (2)

Robin’s first visit to Eye Spy Optical was a little bit strange…the Queen of Specs and the Optical Oracle were on at the shop and just moments before Robin stepped in the door, the power had all gone out. This did not deter Robin.  She had been sent by one of her fab friends to look at our unique frames and a little power outage wasn’t going to deter her.

She looked around for a bit, trying on frames in every color under the rainbow.  A Theo frame caught her eye…part of a limited edition of flourescent Mille specs…in bright blue and green.

I know this is purple...but you can imagine this in blue and green can't you?

Robin loves color and accessories, so she also wanted to look for something she could wear with her jewel-tone outfits.  She tried on Niloca’s Fermie frame and knew she had found her frame-charming. The kalaidesope of amethyst, garnet and carnelian colors was gorgeous with her coloring and would match her hats!

So it was settled…Theo and Niloca frames in gorgeous limited edition colors were going home with her.

We love Robin’s bold choices and think she looks beautiful in both of her new specs!

Customer Of The Week…Katie’s Quest

Written by on April 24th 2015

Hi All!  It is time for Customer of The Week again, and this time we chose a lovely customer who walked in with a pair of ho-hum tortoise specs, and left with some COLOR! Congrats to Katie!!!!

Katie is a world traveller and a professor in Indianapolis, IN and she knows awesome eyewear when she sees it. She had heard tales of a magical eyewear boutique in Chicago that carried an amazing collection of funky fun eyewear.  One early Saturday morning she set out on her journey, in search of this magical oasis. She endured an arduous journey full of stop-and-go traffic and evil construction monsters, but after several hours she made it to the store where beverages were offered to quench her thirst and lovely ladies helped her find the glasses of her dreams.

Katie was wearing a pair of ho-hum tortoise glasses and practically gasped at the rainbow of specs before her. She tried on many pairs, but they were too small, too big, or just somehow not right…that is until she tried on a pair of fun and funky metal pair of Niloca Clockwork glasses in a fun bright orange! They fit like a glove and had fun 3-D details and those dreamy sky blue temple tips! Glasses like these could only come from the mad genius design minds of the folks at Niloca, and they were perfect!

Clockwork

Now you may think that her gorgeous Nilocas are exciting, but wait until you see her 2nd pick…

Mille+12a bright candy red pair of Theo Mille+12 glasses were singing their siren song to Katie.  Lo and behold…Katie tried them on, and again, they too were just right!

KATIE_H2

We love how they almost GLOW on Katie’s pale skin and light blonde hair.

Katie’s journey was complete and she was happy. She returned home, happy to have found her new favorite eyewear boutique and excited about her cool and colorful new specs. AND, she lived happily ever after.

The End.

Shop Local. Shop Lincoln: Paulina Meat Market!

Written by on March 4th 2015

In order to highlight our fellow independent small business owners on our stretch of Lincoln Ave., we asked our photographer, Dave Rentauskus, to take portraits of our comrades in our spectacular specs….along with a few shots of their shops.

Johnny Begale, Sausage Kitchen Manager

Johnny is wearing a spicy Jawd frame by the Australian eyewear designer, Niloca, who are known for unexpected shapes and unique use of color in their handmade frames.

JOHNNY_ PAULINA MEAT MARKET_s

Paulina Meat Market is one of those great family business that are hard to find these days. In 1984, just as the current location was opening it’s doors, Johnny’s dad Bill, applied and started his career, learning to “break down cattle and serve carnivourous Chicagoans.” He and his wife, Laurie had the opportunity to buy the business from the original owners in 2006, and have made the market their own, exapnding their selection of fresh meats and sausages and compimentary products to appeal to the needs of their customers while still keeping the original roots of their German-American Meat Market intact.

Johnny has a degree in accounting from Illinois Wesleyan University and worked for 2 years at McGladrey, but found himself wondering if that was the right fit.  He began working for the family business in 2011 with the Sausage Kitchen team. “I have an awesome family and was fortunate enough to have a place to go when I needed to take a step back and figure things out.” Johnny has also put his accounting and business knowledge to good use, helping to make Paulina Meat Market the World Class Meat Market it is today.

Let’s Dance…with Niloca!

Written by on December 26th 2014

You know how some things just go together…peanut butter and jelly, picnics and sunny days…David Bowie and Niloca! …or is that just me?

GRECA_GERIC_GRANDI

The first time I laid eyes on these babies, I was wowed! The colors, shapes, and even textures that the talented Colin Redmond and his team use in their designs are fit for a queen…or maybe a space alien king!

ziggy

I can’t think of anything better than getting dressed up in a pair of Niloca specs and spending the day dancing through the wonderful world of that crazy music making genius at the David Bowie retrospective at the Museum of Contempoary Design in Chicago. The show features over 400 objects from a 5 decade career including handwritten lyrics, set designs and COSTUMES!

you said what?!?

you said what?!?

Niloca hasn’t been around for 5 decades yet, but with their fun and playful designs, I am willing to bet that  they will be.

space aged in the best of ways

You will have to hurry if you want to go visit Bowie’s world…the last day of the show is January 4th, and you should definitely go, even if you don’t have a pair of wacky specs to wear (but you know where to come if you want some!) The MCA will have special Extended David Bowie is a Holiday Hours  for the last week of the show, so you really don’t have an excuse for missing it.

You know you want to.

You know you want to.

G’Day to Niloca…Our New Line!

Written by on January 27th 2014

Niloca Pile

We have been waiting (in the freezing cold) for our new line to get here. It sure did take them long enough to get here … perhaps because the goodies came from Australia….or maybe it was a combo of Chiberia and Snowpocalypse. What matters is that  Niloca is here NOW!
With the tag line of “…unsuitable for ubiquitous consumption,” they surely do not disappoint!

“Niloca has a heart or rather 4.  Niloca is a family operation, quite often based at the kitchen table.  There are no aspirations to appease hipsters or mass market saturation, just the supply of interesting eyewear to select independent optical purveyors for the delight of eyewear individualists everywhere.”

Come in and try-on these dreamboats! Pssssst… we are the only ones in the states that have them! Bam!
